5 Again

I chose to make a figure out of my paper clips. I always liked drawing and making crafts ever since I was a child so the thought of making a figure with paper clips really excited me as if I was 5 again.

I can't see clearly now.....

I chose to explore every other sense besides sight, by closing my eyes and sitting indoors and outdoors. for 15 minutes each. When I finished I wrote down some of the things I heard, felt, or smelled down on paper. Then I compared the things I had sensed indoors and what I sensed outdoors.

When I sat inside the house I felt very calm and still. However, there was a few distractions such as the toilet flushing, walking, and water running. Then at times it felt like someone was standing over me which broke my concentration. So keeping my eyes closed inside the house made me feel uneasy at times. The sense that was heightened the most was hearing because there were so many different sounds going on that it distracted me from keeping my mind calm.

When I sat outside everything seemed peaceful and harmonious. All of the different sounds I heard and the wind I felt just all seem to flow together and it was not distracting. The sense that was the most heightened for me while sitting outside was more of an internal feeling. I felt a connection with nature because everthing just flowed together.

Recap Class Mon 09/19

What I learned in Monday's class is that sensing something goes beyond the 5 main senses we are all familiar with. I believe there are emotional senses that are triggered in your brain. Our memories are based off of our lives and and the experiences we have had in them. Our memories of something is brought back to us by the triggering any of her senses. The sense of smell, sound, or taste, can be much more powerful than our sense of sight. All of our senses have their own importance in what we recognize and discover. Hearing the different projects from each student was an eye opener to the many ways each individual used their senses and what they discovered and remembered from what they were sensing.

A Smile Can Says a Thousand Things about a Person

What does a smile say about someone's personality. They are happy, fun, loving, cheerful, confident, easy going, exciting, or nice? Do you trust a person that smiles? Are they easier to understand than a person that doesnt?

You see this smile at work, school, the grocery store, church, and even at home. Does this smile tell you a thousand positive things about this person?

What if you found out that this smile belongs to a man that is a rapist, serial killer, or con artists?

Does this smile still give you the same impression? Sometimes a smile can hide a thousand secrets.

I remember this......

Something that I rediscovered yesterday that I will always remember is to never be afraid or hesitant to share my ideas. For my egg project I chose not to to do what I really wanted out of fear of offending someone else when in actuallity I was my own worse critic. I was worried about what other people thought about my idea that I altered it when in reality my idea was actually accepted by the whole class. I will always remember to never be afraid to share my ideas, beliefs, or feelings because that is what makes me who I am.

Another thing that stood out to me was how creatively people percieved their eggs. It's very mind blowing how someone can take something as simple as a raw egg and make it into something inspirational and a piece of art.

Egg Assignment

For my "do something with an egg assignment" I chose to switch out the yolk (embryo) and replace it with a baby ultrasound picture. Both human and chicken embryos are delicate, fragile, and requires warmth. The eggshell covers and protects the embryo during the early developmental stages until it develops into a fetus, so I decided to place a baby fetus in place of a chicken embryo. In the picture you see the egg with a hole in it which reveals the baby fetus during it's developmental stage.

Course Expectations

Honestly I do not know what to expect from Seeing Sideways because I do not know what types of assignments or projects we will be doing. The idea of not have a clear concise day by day plan on the syllabus, is actually exciting because it is break away from the normal class structure. However, I believe that this course will offer a different view of understanding, imagining, and creating new ideas and objects from different perspectives.Overall I just hope to see ideas, objects, and even people in a way that I have never seen before.
